A Dish of Kindness This Thanksgiving

The act of kindness, characterized by qualities such as being friendly, generous, and considerate, has always been a priority in my life. It was one of the reasons I married my husband. I loved his kind heart and his unwavering commitment to doing what is right according to his beliefs. It always amazes me how life’s experiences can redefine something you believe in when you’re ready to change. What I love about any age is that we’re never too young or old to think and act differently. It is that stirring of new energy that awakens our mind, spirit, and body to the undeniable truth, replacing fear and guilt with a feeling of happiness and self-confidence. I have learned that kindness can sometimes wear a veil that hides the true intention of what another wants or feels. When the veil is on, manipulation and selfishness are concealed, and the true giver of kindness who cares and respects another is now being used for a purpose that was not part of their intention. Kindness is not a weakness, but a strength, a light that spreads empathy, respect, and selfless generosity.

When you stand strong in your light, the shadows of others cannot dim the path you are destined for. We need more kindness in the world, but it should not be attached to requests, guilt, and a need to get something in return.

The mistakes I have made have always come with a lesson that, if learned, expanded my thinking and allowed me to move forward with gratitude. I am thankful to my parents, who gave me a magical Thanksgiving while growing up. This year, as I prepare the family meal, my senses will awaken the wonderful smells of my mother’s cooking, the beauty of a table setting, the gathering of family and friends, and my father’s stories and jokes that created laughter throughout the meal. I miss those moments, but they are instilled within me as I carry on with family traditions, knowing that my grandson, James, will follow in my footsteps. This Thanksgiving, I wish for you peace and love, and a special dish of kindness.
